Today’s Worship–January 20th, 2012

Greetings Saints!

Today’s Bible Reading & Verse

Genesis 25-26

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. – Hebrews 10:10-22

Today’s Song Story

Faith of Our Fathers

"Faith of our fathers! living still

In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;

O how our hearts beat high with joy

Whene’er we hear that glorious word."

This hymn, written by Frederick Faber in the 19th century, obviously has to do with Christians suffering persecution — and the inspiration that their heroic witness gave to their fellow Christians. Indeed, we are always inspired by stories of Christians who maintain their faith in the face of persecution or death.

Persecution has been a part of the church’s life from the very beginning, and is still part of its life today. We all know about the Roman persecution of Christians in the first century, but might not realize how pervasive persecution of Christians is in various countries around the world today — in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Iran, and many other countries.

We need to pray for Christians who endure persecution today — to make ourselves aware of their stories — and to be inspired by their heroic witness. Let me encourage you to pray for persecuted Christians today.

  1. Faith of our fathers, living still,
    In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
    Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
    Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!
    • Refrain:
      Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
      We will be true to thee till death.
  2. Faith of our fathers, we will strive
    To win all nations unto thee;
    And through the truth that comes from God,
    We all shall then be truly free.
  3. Faith of our fathers, we will love
    Both friend and foe in all our strife;
    And preach thee, too, as love knows how
    By kindly words and virtuous life.
