Today’s Thought and Scripture
For many believers the extent of their Christianity is going to church on Sunday. For the rest of the week they stick it back under the carpet and go on with their lives. It’s like having a secret identity. During the week they are mild mannered or in many cases not so mild mannered citizen. Come Sunday they turn into Super Christian. Able to sing God’s praises loud enough so that all can hear! Then after the service faster than a speeding bullet to get out of there and out of the parking lot. Other than Sundays no one would even know that they are a Christian. To be a follower of Christ means to impact your world. It means living for Christ every waking hour. People should know you are different. In many cases believers allow the world to change them when it is the world around them believer that should be changing.
Christ is our example. Wherever He went people were changed. Some for the good and some for the worse. No one could remain unaffected by Him. He went into the synagogue in Nazareth and read from the scroll of Isaiah
18″ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted,To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Luke 4:18-19
He went on to do all the that He stated. As a matter of a fact no single human being has ever changed the world as He did in 3 short years of ministry. He said we would do greater things.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. John 14:12
Paul and the apostles went on to do greater things and change their world through the gospel message that Jesus preached. They lived and died for it. Read the book of Acts to see just how much they changed and affected those they came into contact with.
Charles Finney (1792-1875) was an evangelist that constantly walked in the presence of the Lord. When Finney was ministering in Utica, he visited a cotton mill in that area, as he walked through it, he observed that workers were under the sense of conviction. All the workers burst into tears spontaneously as Mr. Finney approached them. The owner of the mill came to know of the happenings, and he told the supervisor of the mill, “stop the mill and let the people attend to religion; for it is more important that our souls should be saved than that this factory run.” The work was stopped and they all gathered in a large place, to them Mr. Finney ministered the word of God. There were a great number of conversions that day; all the workers gave their hearts to Lord Jesus.
It is because the Holy Spirit lives in you that you can change your world. It is He who brings the conviction to others and gives you the power and wisdom you need to interact with those around you. But you can also stifle Him and not allow Him to work.
There are so many ways to change your world. The first is knowing God. Not just knowing about Him but actually taking the time to know Him intimately. He has been revealed to us through His Son Jesus Christ and the Spirit. Get to know Him by daily spending time in prayer and His word the Bible. Next, ask Him how you can change your world. What would He have you do? This world holds a lot of hurting people. James said that Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27 You don’t have to be in ministry to change your world. You just have to make yourself available to be used. The Lord is looking for willing vessels. When you do that, He will use you to change the world.
So take off your secret identity and put it off for good. Let all see who you truly are.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
